Hazel Jane Gregus passed away on November 21st, 2016, at her home in Portland, with her loving family at her side. She was born on November 25th, 1921, in Boring, Oregon, to her parents: William Henry and Margaret (Stout) Breen. She attended Sandy High School. Following graduation, Hazel took business classes, while living in downtown Portland.
On November 25th, 1942, in Vancouver, Washington, Hazel married her husband, Stephen Joseph Gregus. Stephen was in the service, and the family moved frequently during the 20 years that he served. They lived in Washington and California, as well as the Philippines, where they lived for a year and a half. Throughout her travels as a military wife, Hazel made friends with people wherever she went. She was friendly and outgoing, as she enjoyed being able to stay home with her children. Every summer, Hazel and the children would come back to Oregon to spend time with the grandparents, as well as their cousins, on the farm in Cottrell. They would spend their time picking berries and helping with daily tasks. Hazel loved being in the great outdoors and spending time on the farm was one of her passions.
In 1965, Stephen passed away from a heart condition. Hazel never remarried. However, she kept herself busy with raising 4 children still at home and golfing, bowling, and spending time with her loved ones. She also loved taking trips to the casino.
Hazel was a member of St. Henry's Church, and attended St. Michaels in Sandy as well.
Hazel was preceded in passing by her parents, her husband, two of her children, Michael and Kathryn Gregus, and two grandchildren. She is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Robert) Trommels and Kathy Gregus; three sons, Larry (Donna) Gregus, Bill (Dianne) Gregus, and Kevin (Sujinda) Gregus; her daughter in law, Carol Gregus; as well as five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by her beloved nieces, Doris and Penny, who helped with her medical care during the last 30 years and other family members.
A Graveside Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Friday, December 9th, 2016, at 11:00 am. There, she will be laid to rest with Stephen. She will be missed, especially her knowledge and involvement in our political system.
Donations in Hazel's honor can be made to the Alzheimer Association, Francis Center, or to a charity of your choice.
